You really just need to identify a position you want to get and look for a company that's willing to hire you based on the skills you have from being an auditor. This is the first exit point. What firm are you at/what firms are the big players in that space? If this trend keeps up, you'd have to think they will need to start offering more $$$. Maybe if you were a system admin already as well.
I am planning to get my MBA after my Big 4 experience and I would like to know if I could still go into a CFO or Controller position if I went for an IT Audit career at the Big 4 with an MBA? Can confirm. If you want the controller path big 4 audit manager is the common way into industry to set you up for that role after a few years a notch lower. I'll add to what others have been saying, the demand for IT auditors and SOC reporting is insane right now. Switched from Big 4 IT audit to eGRC consulting.
So at my current firm I get to do a mix of financial audits (primarily) with some IT audit work mixed in (mostly ITGCs to support financial audits, and will be on some SOC 1's). I was able to get involved with the data analytics group where I then split my time with IT audit. i do ERP consulting for medium sized businesses for a consulting company (~50 people, international company). i have no soul, eGRC consulting is the way to go. The downside of this is because IT audit has typically enjoyed a higher work-life balance than financial audit, the larger firms seem to think they can just get by with stretching their current resources instead of paying what the market is demanding while keeping that line in the water hoping some fish comes by willing to take a lower salary.
