Another spring break, another trip to visit some National Parks. You may remember that last year we went to Joshua Tree during spring break on a road trip to California. This year we decided to take a spring break trip to Colorado. We have only visited Durango during the holidays to go on the Polar Express, which is surprising because we live so close to CO. Last year we purchased an annual National Park pass, and figured we should try to see a few more before it expired.
Spring Break Trip to Colorado
Colorado is home to four National Parks, and we were able to visit three of them on this trip. We visited Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and the Great Sand Dunes. From Albuquerque, each leg of the trip was around 3 hours. This allowed us to see three parks in three days. Thankfully, we did not have to drive too far in between parks. If you’re a parent, you know that this is the ideal situation!
Each park had it’s own special and unique things to see. The family favorite was most definitely the Black Canyon. We hiked around the canyon, and experienced the most beautiful views. The snow all around definitely made everything feel more magical. Usually my kids don’t love the idea of hiking, but they LOVED hiking Black Canyon. The least favorite park was the Great Sand Dunes. The super fine sand paired with the extreme wind was really difficult to navigate. A week later, and we are still finding sand in the car, shoes, etc.
Thankfully, we were prepared for the colder weather. We saw a lot of snow at the parks and on the drives. It was essential to pack layers, which included jackets, hoodies, comfortable pants, beanies, and gloves. I wound up wearing my tried and true Ultraboost shoes, however I am most definitely purchasing a pair of hiking boots for our next National Park trip. They would have been more comfortable and sturdy to walk around different terrains in. I’d love to visit these parks again when the weather warms up, especially the Black Canyon!
