How To Style Plaid Two Ways – Part One

As the days keep getting shorter, it seems like the weeks do too! I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday! I typically post on Tuesdays and Fridays for The Weekly Style Edit link up, but I’ve decided to switch things up a bit for awhile and start posting on Wednesdays. I am going to be joining a group of lovely ladies that I “met” via Instagram to share some fall style trends with you, so be sure to check them all out at the end of today’s post. This week my post’s will be all about a fall and winter staple: plaid! Who doesn’t love a good plaid shirt? I recently found the plaid button down I’m wearing today at Target and totally feel like I need to pick it up in a few other colors. I usually have a hard time finding button down shirts to be loose enough in the chest, and this one totally fits the bill. It’s so good, I decided to style it two ways, even though the styling options are endless. The Weekly Style Edit Link Up: Bomber Jackets

Man, this week just flew by! I feel like just yesterday I was celebrating my birthday in a hot air balloon and now I’m already preparing for the weekend ahead. The past few weeks have been so much fun, which you may have seen some glimpses of them if you follow me on Snapchat (@lindsayrutland). It’s also still not quite feeling like fall, but I’m totally trying to make fall happen. I recently found this floral print bomber jacket at Target, and knew it had to be mine. It also happened to be the perfect piece for this week’s The Weekly Style Edit with Megan from The Fashionista Momma. Bomber jackets are so on trend right now, and are such a cute layering piece for fall! Marking Items Off Your Bucket List

This past Monday I celebrated my 32nd birthday, and really could not have asked for a better day. It was my mom’s birthday on the 9th (the day before mine), and we always plan a joint birthday celebration. She has been talking for years about wanting to take a hot air balloon ride, and it has always been an item on my bucket list. This year we finally decided to make it happen! Living in New Mexico, October is all about the balloons. The past two weeks the International Balloon Fiesta took place here, and there are pretty much hot air balloons in the air all month long. With that in mind, it didn’t take long for us to find a company to fly with once we decided we were actually going to go through with taking a ride. We wound up purchased our ride on Groupon (which I’ve shared my love for here and here), and it worked out perfectly! If you follow me on Snapchat (@lindsayrutland), you saw that were able to be a part of the whole process. We were able to help with inflating the balloon, as well as packing it all back up at the end of the ride after we landed. It was so cool to see and be involved in each step of the process.
As I mentioned in last week’s post, it has been so warm here lately and Monday was no exception. I think it wound up being close to 80 at the peak of the day. I’ve always heard that you should dress in layers and be prepared for it to be warm while in a balloon, and that is no joke! I started off the day bundled in a sweater with a blanket scarf and a coat. I wound up only wearing my sweater on the ride, and it was still surprisingly hot. It really didn’t matter though because the ride was absolutely incredible! I think being able to see the different shades of leaves on the Cottonwood trees along the Rio Grande River from up in the balloon may have been my favorite part. It was an amazing experience to have, and was even more special because I was able to share it with my mom on my birthday!

The Weekly Style Edit Link Up: Cardigans

Today’s Weekly Style Edit link up with Megan from Fashionista Momma is definitely one of my favorites so far because as soon as the weather cools down, I pretty much live in cardigans! They’re especially great as a layering piece when it’s still warm out, which you know it has been here in Albuquerque. I feel like I’m always wearing jeans or pants, so I decided to switch it up a bit and throw on a dress for once. This striped Old Navy dress is probably over 2 years old, but is something I’ve held on to because you never know when you might need a basic striped dress. There is a very similar striped swing dress available now and is on sale for $15. Stripes and leopard are one of my favorite ways to pattern mix, and I immediately knew I wanted to liven the outfit up a bit with my leopard foldover clutch. I know I’ve shared this Gray Monroe leopard clutch a million times before (last seen here), but it’s so perfectly roomy and only $40! If you don’t have one already, you definitely need to pick one up for fall.

How to Dress For Fall (When It Still Feels Like Summer Out)

how to dress for fallI don’t know about where you live, but here in New Mexico is seriously still feels like summer most days. I think yesterday it was around 80 degrees… definitely not what you would expect for the first week of October. Don’t get me wrong, I am not in a rush to say goodbye to summer, but it does make getting dressed in the morning a bit of a challenge at times. Here are the top 4 tips I live by when it comes to dressing for fall when it still feels like summer out:
1. Layer, layer, layer! – I recently posted this outfit, and have definitely worn it multiple times since. The top I am wearing is a tank top, which is perfect for the days when it is 80 degrees in the afternoon, but really chilly in the morning when leaving for work. Throwing a jean jacket over the top of pretty much anything (tops, sweaters, dresses, etc.) is ideal for fall!
2. Try a cold shoulder or off the shoulder top – I wore this cold shoulder blouse over the weekend when we visited Wagner’s Farm to pick up some fresh green chile, and it was loose and airy enough to keep me cool in the sun. I love the idea of a cold shoulder top layered with a blazer or utility vest as well.
3. Throw a cardigan on – Maybe it’s because I live somewhere that doesn’t actually experience fall until mid to late October (or later), but I am a huge fan of cardigans. My ideal outfit throughout the year is a good tee or tank with a cardigan and my favorite pair of jeans. Choose your desired thickness depending on what you are layering it with.
4. Opt for lightweight pieces – A great pair of distressed jeans and a flowy blouse are always good options to keep you cool when the temperatures are high, and are just right to keep you warm if needed. This also goes for shoes – a nice lightweight pair of ankle boots can be worn with a dress or jeans no matter what the forecast throws your way.

Oh my gosh you guys, tomorrow is OCTOBER! Can you even believe it? October is by far my favorite month because it is my birthday month, and there are a lot of exciting things happening in the next few weeks. Next week my husband and I are going to be seeing two of our favorite bands – Mumford & Sons and City & Colour. I was actually just checking the weather and the night that we see Mumford it is finally supposed to be pretty chilly here (think mid 60’s).
